Raymond Williams' View of Popular Culture

对于大众文化批判和研究理论而言,威廉斯具有承上启下的作用。他始终以一种动态的、发展的目光关注适应时代的、新的文化特质的出现,抛弃文化仅仅是精神和艺术产品的狭义的文化概念,确立了“文化是普通的”这一立论。威廉斯称大众的含义是民有、民享,为民喜闻乐见,它更现代的意义是为许多人所喜爱。

As for critical and study theories of popular culture, Williams played a role of connecting link between the preceding and the following. He was always keeping his dynamic and evolufional eyes on emergence of new culture trait that adjusts to the times. He abandoned the narrow concept that culture was only spiritual and artistic product and argued that culture is popular. The meaning of ＂popular＂ was of the people, for the people and loved by the people. Its more modem meaning was popular with lots of people.
