A Cognitive Analysis of the English Ergative Structure

文章从认知语言学的角度出发,对英语作格结构存在的深层理据进行了深入的探讨,发现作格句以受事充当主语是由人的认知方式决定的,中动句等句式因偏离了EICM而成为作格句的特殊形式。

This paper adopts a cognitive approach, aiming at uncovering the deep mechanism that underlies the English ergative structure. The author finds that ergatives＇ preference for patient as its subject is related to how we perceive things and situations around us. Middles are regarded as non - prototypical form because of their deviation from EICM of ergatives.
