Avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head have become a more common orthopedic problem in recent years. Since 1984, we have performed combined core decompression, bone grafting and intertrochanteric osteotomy in 54 hips of 52 patients with stage II or III osteonecrosis of the femoral head.Staging of the pathologic process is important, as selection of appropriate treatment depends on the stage of the disease.All the patients were followed up for 6 to 57 months(with a median of 36 months) .Twenty-three per cent were rated as excellent, 46 per cent good and 31 per cent fair. The results showed that the combined surgical method proved to be efficient for avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head in stage II or III.
