A Comparative Analysis of Speech Reporting in China Daily and The New York Times

人们在分析英语新闻语篇时特别关注其中的转述言语。这样的研究在范围和方法上早已超越了传统的局限，从着重描述直接引语和间接引语之间的形式转换转向重视对各种形式的引语做出语篇和语用上的解释。人们认识到转述引语的性质与功能因语篇类型的不同而有所不同，对它们的研究应建立在对具体的语篇和语境的分析上。本文拟以有限的语料为基础对《中国日报》和《纽约时报》中转述言语的一些分布特点和语用功能进行初步的考察分析。我们将只关注转述方式和消息来源。

Owing to the essential role it plays in news reporting, reported speech demands special attention in any serious analysis of news discourse. Contemporary studies of speech reporting have significantly shifted their major efforts from the traditional concern with syntactic operations for transforming direct into indirect speech to situated accounts of speech reporting which are sensitive to contexts and discourse types. This paper is a com- parative study of the distributional and functional features of reported speech in China Daily and The New York Times. We will merely focus on reporting mode and news source.
