The Bel-2 gene family plays important roles during the development and dynamic balance of Central Nervous System. Bcl-xl and Bax play crucial roles in regulating neuron differentiation. Bax and Bak play roles in regulating the amount of the neural progenitor cell. Bax, Bel-xl, and Bcl-2 regulate the apoptotic response caused by neurotrophic factor deprivation. In contrast, excitotoxie cell death does not dependend on either Bax or Bak. But the absence of Bax can enhance the toxicity of neuroexcitatory molecules.
