The general theme of Ba Jin＇s family-themed stories is to disclose and criticize the wickedness of feudal families. However, his early experience of family life and latter life experience made Ba Jin produce a special feeling towards family, which penetrated into his writing process making his stories take on a complex look and involve in profound contradictions, i.e., his dominant criticism of and latent attachment to the traditional patriarchal clan system, which incarnates the dual spiritual traits of modem intellectuals.
