On Jia Yi's Literary Concept of "Universal Morality"

贾谊是十分重视文艺的教化作用和认识作用的。他尤为重视其认识作用,而不太注意其抒情作用。如果从创作方面来看,贾谊不太重视文学艺术的抒情作用的话,那么从审美的角度看,也就必然不太重视文艺的愉情作用。当然要完全否定文艺的愉情作用是不可能的。因为文学艺术作为一种社会意识形式,它的作用就是通过感情的愉悦进而影响人们的意志的。

Jia Yi attached great importance to the pedagogic function of literary works. He paid special attention to their cognitive function rather than the expression of emotion.If he paid less attention to the expression of emotion from the perspective of literary creation, he didn＇t need to pay much attention to the estertsming function of the literary works from the aesthetic perspective. However, it is impossible to completely deny the entertaining function of literary works, since itis through the entertainment of emotion that literary works exert their impact upon human will.
