摘要
认知语言学认为隐喻是人类认知的一种重要手段,而空间隐喻在人类的认知活动中扮演着重要角色,许多抽象概念都必须通过空间隐喻来构建。本文通过分析从词典中收录的含UP和DOWN的词语的意义,力图揭示它们的隐喻拓展意义及其认知基础。最终得出的结论有两点:(1)英语中较好的事物通常被视为UP,而较不好的事物通常被视为DOWN。(2)英语中的常用UP和DOWN来构建四个目标域:即数量、社会等级、状态和时间。
Cognitive linguistics holds that metaphor is an important method of people' s cognition, and spatial metaphor plays an important role in people' s cognition. Many abstract concepts are constructed through spatial metaphor. This paper is intended to analyze the metaphorical extensions of "UP" and "DOWN" and explore their cognitive basis by searching them in the English dictionaries. It can be concluded in two aspects: (1) In English, good things are usually considered "UP", bad things are considered "DOWN". (2)"UP"and "DOWN" are mainly projected onto four target do- mains, namely quantity, social status, states and time.
