This paper makes a brief introduction to the span, a hierarchical dynamic unit of meaning in the rhetorical structure theory （RST）. It illustrates with examples and suggests that the span in RST be employed as the translation unit in legal English, which can make clear of the logic relationship in legal English and get an accurate translation in its content and style.
