Objective To observe the difference of learning and memory abilities between the aged female and male wistar rats, and to explore the impact of estrogen to the learning and memory. Methods 26 healthy Wistar rats of 18-month-old, 16 female and 10 male, were bred in same conditions for 2 months, then their abilities of learning and memory were detected and statistically analyzed. Results The average escape latencies of aged female rats were longer than that of male in each block, and in the 5th to 9th blocks there were significant statistical difference (P〈0.01). The average number of female rats passing the platform was 3.75±2.11 times, which is significantly lower than that of male 6.4±3.98 times (P〈0.05). Conclusion The estrogen withdraw plays a major role in the decrease ability of learning and memory aged female rats.
