This paper proposes that in a referentially metonymic sentence, the semantic dissonance between the predicate and its argument is scalar, and that the strength of dissonance determines the relative salience of the source element and the target element. When the dissonance is larger, the target element is forced out and it tends to be referred to by the anaphoric pronoun; by contrast, when the dissonance is smaller, the source element becomes salient due to its being in an active state and in the topic position, and it tends to be referred to by the anaphoric pronoun. This is the anaphoric reference mechanism of the referential metonymy.
