摘要
It is commonly said that Shanghai Teal was an attempt made by Shanghai Municipal Council to substitute the popular Spanish Pillar- and Mexican dollars. But records of British side tell a different story. They indicate it as one of several unsuccessful efforts made by the ill-fated Hong Kong mint to persuade the Chinese Government to use the mint’s products. Furthermore, the reasons for rejecting this pattern not because of its British Royal Arms & Garter designs, but simply of no interest in adopting a silver coinage at that time.
