Yang Xiong's Views on Words and Meanings

扬雄是西汉末年有卓越贡献的思想家、文学家和文字学家。他在文学理论上所提出的“言意观”是对先秦以来“言意观”的继承和发展,是对先秦以来争辩难清的“言意关系”问题较为系统的回答。

Yang Xiong was a thinker , writer and philologist with a brilliant contribution in the last years of the Western Han Dynasty . By inheriting and developing views on words and meanings put forward since the pre-Qin days, he advanced his own views on words and meanings , offering a systematic answer to the question of the relationship between words and meanings , which had been argued but not cleared up by the pioneers in the field.
