With prevailing of Post-modernism, the borderline of serious and popular fictions is obscured. Accordingly, the literary research on Melville is not restricted by conventions. This article is to analyze the specific use of such popular fiction formulas as Satiric Adventure, Gothic, City Expose and Women' s fictions in some of his serious novels. In the proces of creation, Melville absorbed and adopted many popular fiction methods not only to please the readers but to better realize his ideas of creation and develop his own writing style, thus succeeding on a higher level in communicating with the readers in the depths of their hearts.
