In China and Russian relation history, It was an important event that China negotiated with Russia about Yili in the late 19th Century. In order to ask Russia to return Yili where had been occupied by force, Qing government signed treaty Yili Treaty （its also called ＂Treaty Revised between china and Russia＂） after ten years＇ negotiation. During that time, Zuo Zong-tang was in charge of military affairs of Xinjiang which supported the negotiation strongly. Probing into the change of Zuo Zong-tang＇s thought on the negotiation with Russia about Yili will strengthen the understanding of Chinese and Russian relationship in history. This article mainly states Zuo Zong-tang＇s views and actions and explores his thoughts in the process of negotiating between China and Russian about Yili, so shows Zuo Zong-tang＇s role in this negotiation.
