The Choral Art of Qu Xixian

瞿希贤的音乐创作,主要是声乐作品。她的音乐热情亲切,朴实无华,琅琅上口,雅俗共赏,多年以来,深受人民大众的欢迎和喜爱。几十年来,从“抗日救亡”时代到新中国建立的各个历史阶段,她总是善于观察,勤于探索,以无比热情,投身到生活的洪流之中,创作了众多为人民大众喜听乐唱的歌曲。其中更以独具特色的合唱歌曲影响巨大．2003年出版的《飞来的花瓣——瞿希贤合唱作品选》,辑录了作曲家多年来的情韵和心血,它也堪称是中国一段历史时期的“音画”见证。

In terms of content and subject matters,the choral works of Qu Xixian can be divided into four categories: the voice of the times,the charms of the nation,the passion for the world and the love for the children. The voice of the times: this outstanding and accomplished woman composer, bold enough to be a leading person in the music movements of her times,has created such grand and majestic works that can rival the masculinity of many males. The charms of the nation: the composer depicted in colourful and rich styles the beauty of her motherland. Many of her famous songs such as 'The Pastoral Song' , which have been sung by the public for half a century,are regarded as treasures of Chinese chorus a cappella. A large number of solo songs and fold songs, such as 'Wusuli Barcarolle' , 'Mayila' , 'Little Cabbage' ,and 'In That Remote Place' had been 'woven' into chorus editions with varied styles and forms, providing for the vocal stages a rich feast of chorus. The passion for the world: besides her choral works with 'passion for her motherland' ,there are others that 'look at the world' ,many of which are remarkable and meaningful masterpieces. The love for the children;since the 1950' s,Qu Xixian has composed many excellent songs for children,such as 'Morning Exercise Song' , 'Happy Evening Party' ,and 'Gift from the Old Man of Time' . 'Listening to Mother Tell a Story of the Past' ( lyric by Guan Hua ) used to be a song of single voice part, usually performed on stage as singing with action. This masterpiece, created in 1957,has ever since influenced several generations of the people. In 1987,it was rearranged as a chorus piece. Qu Xixian' s music is a mirror of the times reflecting the soul of the people. She has composed with full passion and high artistry many beautiful songs that are so popular among the general public. She has made great contributions to contemporary Chinese music through her artistic creation, particularly her choral works,which are really exquisite treasures that have helped enriched the musical life of the Chinese people.
