《在中国屏风上》是毛姆一部比较重要的散文集,是作家在中国旅游时的所见所闻所感,他以他深邃的观察力和优美而犀利的文笔,描写了在中国接触到的人物、风景和某些偶然事件,构筑了一个别样的中国形象。在书中,毛姆用工笔画般的手法着力刻画了两个中国文人,文化保守主义者辜鸿铭和现代戏剧学者宋春舫。重点探讨作者对这两位中国文人形象的描述,可梳理出决定性影响毛姆所建构此形象的深层文化原因。
On a Chinese Screen is one of Mangham's important works, which recorded his tour in China. By his profound insight and his elegant, sharp pen, he depicted the characters, the sceneries and some incidents he met in China, which shaped a particular image of China. Employing the way of colaborate- style painting, Maugham devoted to describing the images of two Chinese, one of which was a conservative in culture, Gu Hongming, and the other was the scholar of modem drama Song Chunfang. The thesis will concentrate on the scholars in On a Chinese Screen. Through the analysis of the text, the thesis attempts to analyze the image of China's scholars made by Maugham and the decisive and the deep cultural reason which exerts a decisive influence upon such image.
