[Objective] To develop the Chinese version of Dental Fear Survey (DFS) and test the reliability and validity of DFS, [ Methods ] The English version of DFS was translated and back-translated, as well as crosscultural adapted by the method of psychometrics to develop the Chinese version of DFS. A total of 439 adult people aged 18 and over were randomly selected and surveyed by the Chinese version of DFS. Formal psychometric properties were tested according to the survey. Levels of dental fear were also rated by themselves. [ Besults ] The test-retest reliability coefficient of DFS was 0.85. The internal consistency coefficient was 0.94. The split-haft reliability coefficient was 0.87. The item-scale correlation ranged from 0.45 to 0.87. The factor analysis of DFS resulted in four factors which accounted for 71.32% of the scale' s total variances. The four factors contained three domains of DFS, which were avoidance of dental treatment and anticipated anxiety, somatic symptoms of anxiety and anxiety caused by dental stimuli. The DFS scores were showed significant difference in subjects with different selfrated dental fear (P〈 0.001). [Conclusions] The Chinese version of DFS demonstrated good reliability and validity. Sufficient discriminative and evaluative psychometric properties of the Chinese version of DFS made the instrument suitable for study on dental fear for Chinese adult populations, and provided theoretical evidence for its future use.
