All the King s Men。
This paper is an analysis of the narrative discourse All the King's Men from a cognitive approach, centering round a conceptual metaphor, using theories advanced by Lakoff and Langacker. The text is found to unfold within the framework of narrative structure, presenting the life of the characters, thus providing the experiential basis for the metaphor, and, meanwhile, proceeding with the conceptualization and construal of the experience by means of the metaphorization of the metaphoric expression “twitch”. The result is a conceptual mapping across the domains — a conceptual metaphor: Life Is A Twitch. The metaphor serves as the unifying factor in the text, which ensures the coherence of the discourse, and the text, in its turn, represents the realization of the metaphor.
