The labial gland is the largest gland in the worker honey bee (Apis cerana). It lies behind the brain and divided into two parts, one left and one right. The gland consists of small pear-shaped acini, made up of some polygonal cell. The outlets of the acini open arborescently into a common bursa, from which a single main duct leads to the base of the paraglossa. The labial gland is responsible for producing the enzyme which inverts the sucrose of nectar or syrup. The result of which is the glucose and fructose in honey. The labial gland cells seem only to be differentiated into glandular cells and duct cells. Not only morphological structure of organelles in cell has been observed but also approach of transmissing secretion has been known.
