This chapter summarises the current state of the content based image retrieval （CBIR）. It discusses the necessity of content based image retrieval. And it also describes the main techniques currently used to retrieve images by content at both primitive and semantic levals, describes the features of some commercial CBIR systems, and outlines possible future of development in this field.
