A review on the earliest classical novel A Story of Four Beautiful Prostitutes in Shanghai （hai shang mingji si da jingang qi shu ） written by the novelist Wu Yanren （in the late Qing Dynasty） with the files found in the Gossip （Xiao Xian Newspaper）. Describing stories in the city life and funny news selected from newspapers and magazines of the time, the novel indicated the direction of the modern novel＇ s development.
