On Hu Shih's Political Liberalism of the Magazine the New Moon

1927年至1930年胡适居住在上海的日子在他人生中独立成一片断。在沪初期,他在政治上保持沉默,后因时局的诱因与他本人议政的爱好,他在《新月》月刊上发表一系列政论文章批评国民党政府,表达了他的自由主义政治思想。这些思想的内涵是法治保障人权、民主宪政、言论自由、和平渐进改革。该思想在当时社会舆论中产生较大反响。

The days in which Hu Shih lived in Shanghai from 1927 to 1931 were the independent periods in his life. He kept silence in polities in the early days in Shanghai. Later, because of reasons of society and his hobbies of politics, he published a series of articles on politics in the magazine of the New Moon to criticize the Kuomintang government and express his political liberalism. The essence of these thoughts includes guarantee of human rights by law, democracy and constitutionalism, freedom of speech, peaceful and gradual reform. The thoughts produced a great influence on social public opinion and propelled practical democratic politics forward more or less at that time.
