A Tang Epitaph and the Marriage Connections between the Hu (Non-Han) and Han Peoples

墓志记载盛唐时期突厥首领、双河郡都督?舍提噋啜嫁女阿史那氏于羽林军大将军张羲之,结为姻戚,生活于长安。统治阶层胡汉联姻是社会开放型婚姻的表象,体现了朝廷绥靖西域、促进民族交流与融合的史实。

The epitaph records that a Turk chieftain, the General-in-Chief of Shuanghe Jun (Prefecture), Sheshetidunchuo married his daughter Ashina to the General-in-Chief of the Palace Guard Zhang Xizhi in Chang'an during the High Tang period. Ashina was from a noble family, which belongs to the Ten Tribes of the Turks. Though the marriage between the ruling classes of the Hu and Han ethnic groups was merely a surface phenomenon of open marriage in the society then, it reveals a historical fact that the imperial court pacified the Western Regions to promote the exchange and intermixing between different ethnic groups.
