旧史称杜牧“刚直有奇节”,今之论者亦谓其“刚直耿介”,在牛李党争中“不屑逢迎权贵”,“不肯稍事敷衍”。本文以史实为镜照之杜牧,认识其在牛李党争中的依违变化,并追寻出其合于自己、有利于自己、能寄予希望者则趋之,否则则舍之的趋舍标准,以提供对其知人论世的另一个侧面。
