Probing into the Cultural Implication of Chinese Cooking Vocabulary

摘要 烹食(烹饪和饮食)词汇在汉语词汇宝库中占有一定的比例,这些词大都被赋予了深层的文化意义。由于比喻和人们丰富的联想,使得烹食过程中的器具(锅碗瓢盆)、材料(菜米油盐)、方法(烹炒吃喝)等可根据形貌、性状和用途等引申出“大锅饭”“、豆腐渣”“、捞油水”“、炒鱿鱼”等具有文化意义的新词语。 Cooking (cookery and diet) vocabulary takes up a certain proportion in Chinese vocabulary and most of these words have been vested with deeper cultural implications. Because of certain imagery and imagination, it makes the utensils used in the course of cooking (such as cooking pans, bowls, gourd dippers and basins), material (chief daily necessities such as vegetables, rice, oil and salt), and cooking methods (boiling, frying and dining) etc., according to the appearance, properties and purposes, develop into new words and phrases with cultural implications: "da guo fan" (mess Big Pot Rice; extreme equalitarianism), "doufu zha" (soybean curd residue; project with inferior quality), "lao you shui" (rake off; gain by improper means), "chao you yu" (fry squid; dismiss) and so on.
