The Signpost, which appeared in 1909, had great influence on the transforming Russian literature. Two groups of intelligentsia began a fury debate on the staging of Dostoevsky' s The Possessed in 1913. The divided opinions indicate the different attitudes of intelligentsia to the revolution and culture. The debate ends in Gorky' s silence, but in fact, it is a farewell to 19th century' s revolutionary tradition for Russian intelligentsia.
