Taoist Internal Alchemy in the Horizon of Modern Civilization

本文先考察20世纪上半叶中国的道教理论家为建立现代内丹学所作的种种努力,然后分析这一时期西方的汉学家、心理学家对传统内丹经典的翻译和评论,最后通过比较东西方学者从不同角度所作的研究,对于内丹学的前途以及它所涉及的道教学术在未来文明远景中所处的地位问题,做出若干一般性的结论。

This essay first examines various attempts aimed at establishing new theories of internal alchemy made by the Chinese Taoist theoreticians in the first half of the Twentieth Century. The essay then analyzes the translations and commentaries of som~ traditional classics of Taoist internal alchemy made in the same period by some Western sinologists and psychoanalysts. Lastly upon comparing the studies conducted from different angles by Eastern and Western scholars, the essay envisages the prospect of Taoist internal alchemy and the status of Taoist culture within the future civilization.
