"Faithfulness" Is Not the Only Standard to Evaluate the Value of Translation——Enlightenment from Lin Shu's Successful Translation

本文以林纾成功的翻译为例,分析社会背景和接受者因素对翻译行为的影响,指出衡量译作的价值,不只在看它是否“忠实”于原作,还在于看它是否适应社会进步的需求,有时后者比前者更重要。

Taking Lin Shu＇s successful translation as an example, this paper discusses the effects that social background and readers＇ factors have on translation. Pointing out that the standard to evaluate translating work is not only whether it is faithful to the original, but also whether it helps to promote the development of the society; sometimes the latter is more important.
