China's shipbuilding tonnage has reached a record high of more than 12.12 million in 2005, grabbing 17 per cent of the global shipbuilding market, up from 1.6 per cent in 2000. The nation's shipbuilding tonnage is expected to continue to grow steadily in 2006 as a result of mounting capacity of domestic shipyards and abundant orders. But many Chinese shipyards appear short of capacity to satisfy the world's strong ship demand. Foreign shipbuilding giants, such as those from South Korea and Japan, are accelerating penetration into China, with some hoping to gain controlling stakes in Chinese shipyards, and even build wholly-owned shipyards. China's ship exports have also been growing rapidly in recent years due to booming global ship demand. Facing more opportunities than challenges at the booming global ship market, the nation's shipbuilding industry should try to take more foreign and domestic orders and ensure enough orders for the year 2010. China's growing need for foreign energy and mineral resources will surely spur Chinese shipping companies to expand their fleets. The current flourishing world ship market has brought opportunities for China with a sharp competitive edge in technological innovation rather than low-cost labor force.
