“群体心态学”是与政治学、心理学、行政学等学科相关的边缘学科。其研究的动因是出于人类社会已进入“群体时代”,常常受到某种群体行为的冲击。一百年来,该学科经历了五个发展阶段,目前的研究正深入群体心态所具有的种种机制,目的是为了有效组织并引导群体行为,促进经济社会的稳定发展。
