In the late-Ming and early-Qing period, commerce flourished in the Jiangnan region, giving rise to a flourishing art market. Anhui merchant collectors and dealers in calligraphic works and paintings prospered as never before. For a time, Suzhou, Jiaxing and Hangzhou became the main centres in the art market in the Jiangnan region. The growth of economic forces in the Huizhou area in particular ensured that a mature art market developed in this period. The prosperity of the art market naturally gave rise to a group of Anhui merchant collectors and this in turn created a group of art dealers and middlemen. Some art dealers in the Jiangnan region also acted on behalf of northern connoisseurs and collectors, and this led to the gradual flourishing of an art market embracing northern and southern China.
