Thomas Hardy used a lot of symbolic techniques in his Tess of the D＇ Urbervisses and the Mayor of Casterbridge. They help to heighten the atmosphere of tragedy and vividly portrayed the characters＇ personality and inner self. They also help to set off the theme of fate by contrast and strongly attack the hypocrite of capital societies. The article explores the symbolic art in three re- spects： symbolism of place name, the symbolism of environment, and the symbolism of animals.
