The Sexism Reflected in the Asymmetrical Meanings of English Appellation Words

从语义角度分析英语中的称谓词发现,男性称谓词和女性称谓词在语义上具有不对称性,许多女性称谓词不具有和对应的男性称谓词完全对等的涵义。男性称谓词的内涵意义通常是积极的、肯定的,大多具有中性或褒义色彩;而女性称谓词的内涵意义往往是消极的、否定的,贬义诋毁色彩比较明显,反映女性被动、附属、次要的社会地位,影射着对女性的性别歧视。

From the perspective of semantic analysis, it can be found that the meanings of the English appellation words referring to male and those of the English appellation words referring to female are asymmetrical. The connotations of many appellation words referring to female do not equivalent to those of the corresponding appellation words referring to male. The connotations of the appellation words referring to male are usually positive and affirmative with the color of being neutral or commendatory, while the connotations of the appellation words referring to female are often passive and negative with the color of being derogatory, reflecting female＇s passive, subsidiary and secondary social position and revealing the sexism to female.
