The Effects of the Imperial Examination System in Tang Dynasty on the Classical Prose Movement

In Tang dynasty, the classical trend in prose writing resulted in the changes in the content and format of the imperial examinations, while these changes in turn affected the writing style in general, and promoted the establishment and development of the concept of classical prose. There are three major aspects of the interaction between the classical trend and the imperial examinations. Firstly, in Tang dynasty, the major subject and fashion of the imperial examinations were related to the classical prose. Secondly, the classical movement supporters approved of the classical prose theory, and their criticism of the blight in the imperial examinations justified the classical prose theory and standardized the style and the manner of the scholars. Final- ly, the classical movement supporters cultivated innovative force with the＇ imperial examination system, which enhanced the influence of the classical prose movement.
