A significant milestone was passed this year with news that subscriptions to 3G mobile networks (WCDMA plus CDMA2000 1xEV-DO) had passed the 50 million mark. Out of this total, by September 2005 there were 33 million 3G/UMTS customers subscribing to over 80 WCDMA networks in 35 countries. Crucially, this subscriber growth has been in the face of a market where mobile penetration is already high in most developed markets. While second generation networks were kicking against an open door over a decade ago, the rapid adoption of 3G even greater for UMTS/WCDMA than that of GSM in the same time period makes its success all the more noteworthy.
