摘要 A quarter of century ago, Shenzhen was just a small township bordering with Hong Kong, with only a tiny population of 30,000, Since the reform and opening up policy was launched in 1979, Shenzhen has been designated as a special economic zone and has seen a startlingly high speed of economic growth. As the fastest-developed, newly-emerged metropolis in the world and probably the largest venue for architectural experiments, Shenzhen has seen its GDP rocketing by 1500 times within a short period of two and half decades. Meanwhile, migrants 14 times as many as original local villagers from across the country, most of which are low-wage factory workers and salesmen, have rushed into the city to pursue their Chinese-style American dreams. Original residents built tensely concentrated garrets on their own lands to cater to the seemingly infinite needs of new comers for dwelling, Thus so-called villages-amidst-the-city, or urban villages, have gradually developed. In "2005 Shenzhen City· Architecture Biennial", the status quo and way out of urban villages in Shenzhen drew extensive attention of participating artists, architects, college teachers and students as well as ordinary local dwellers. Artists manifested the culture of villages- amidst-the-city and their diversified concepts of renovation by means of photography, scripts and video. The exhibition on urban villages has become not only the focus of the biennial but also a unique reflection of Shenzhen’s urban construction.
