Symbolism is one of the most frequently employed techniques in short novels. In his short story A White Heron, Jewett ingeniously combines the colors of white and black with some common images that enhance the story＇ s expressiveness and artistic appeal. This paper attempts to analyze these two conflicting colors employed in the story, focusing on their various funetious and symbolic meanings in different contexts.
