Starting with the writing background of the poem Dover Beach, the paper analyses the social setting of England, Matthew Arnold's creative experience and his emotional vicissitudes when the poem was composed. All these factors cast light on the gloomy tone of the poem, the poet's lament for the ebb of "the sea of faith" and his grief over the human misery.
