Inheritance and Transcendence——On James Baldwin and Protest Tradition in Afro-American Literature

Although encouraged by Richard Wright, the elder writer, and his ＂protest novel＂, James Baldwin became acutely aware of the limitations of the protest tradition in Afro - American literature while holding the tradition by putting it into practice. Hence, he tried to break the tradition and make a new endeavor. His idea of racial integration has deeply influenced the black writers of the young generations, offering them a new thought in probing into the racial problems.
