曹雪芹写史湘云,既不同写黛玉的那种传神的朦胧笔法,也不同于写宝钗的那种世俗美人的套路。纯真率直,出言无忌是湘云最突出的性格特点。真纯率直娇憨之中,蕴含着一种难以言传的聪明灵秀之气,这又是湘云迥于其他姊妹,并惹人怜爱的另一个性格特点。“从未将儿女私情略萦心上,”也是湘云豁达、开朗性格特征的一个亮点。湘云决不可能像宝姐姐那样循规蹈矩,用礼教纲常去铸造自己,这正是曹雪芹倾尽心力理想熔铸湘云光彩照人的典型性格魅力所在。

Unlike the indistinct way of describing Dai-yu and the stereotyped way of delineating Bao-chai, the mundane beauty, Cao Xue-qin showed Shi Xiang-yun＇s most prominent character of straightforwardness and ingenuousness. Othcr merits of Xiang-yun＇s character, which make her distinguishable from siblings, are magnanimity and unspokcn cleverness. Xiang-yun would never lead the same lifc as Bao-chai did, which resulted in so channing a role. This is what the author wantcd to express.
