中国小说发展到唐代，进入了一个新的阶段，标志着我国小说步入了成熟期。以爱情婚姻为题材的作品代表着唐传奇的最高成就。这些作品大都揭露封建婚姻制度的残酷。抨击封建礼教和门阀制度对妇女的迫害。同情下层妇女的悲惨境遇，歌颂她们为争取爱情幸福而进行的反抗和斗争。塑造了一系列具有反抗精神、个性鲜明独特、可歌可敬的女性形象。

Chinese novels had entered a new era of development in Tang Dynasty, marking the maturity of the art of novel in China. Among these legends, works on love and marriage represent the highest achievement. Most of these works are devoted to expose the cruelty of feudal marital system, and criticize the persecution of women by feudal conventions and aristocratic morality. They are also sympathetic about the miseries and misfortunes of women from the lower ranks, and sing of their rebellion to fight for love and happiness. These works together have portrayed a group of women personages with rebellious spirit and distinctive peculiar personalities deserving eulogizing and admiration.
