That Li Tuixi studies, interprets, and comments on, The Book of Changes is entirely for the purpose to cultivate himself and to implement what he has learned. His doctrine is different from that of Zhu Xi's, although he has at the same time inherited its legacy. He argues for the view that"The Book of Changes is a book concerning the origin of the eight diagrams and their respective positions , "but against Zhu Xi's conclusion that"it is a book of divination. " He comprehends accurately the meaning of the doctrine of the Mean under all contexts (shi zhong), and puts it into practice as well. And he advocates that the ritual has its own reason to exist but does not stay unchanged, i.e. it is both constant and variational: it is in accordance with the customs and manners, tact and flexible, with"originating itself from benevolence and sincerity"as its basis.
