The hollow man in Heart of Darkness illustrates the spiritual crisis of modern society. The tension between brightness and darkness highlights indifference and insanity of modern men. The hollow state of the colonizers not only reveals the dilemma of man, but also proves the deep crisis of modern civilization. Konrad＇s retrospection of modern civilization makes him one of the pioneers of modernism.
