BACKGROUND & AIM:Exposure of cigarette smoke (CS) can increase oxidative damage, this research aimed to study the protective effect of supplementation of almond on DNA damage in smokers.MATERIAL AND METHOBS:Thirty smokers were recruited into our study, and were divided into three groups(n = 10) which received almond 0 g/d,84 g/d and 168 g/d respectively, and the study period was for 28 days. In the beginning and the end of the study, eotinine and 8-hydroxy- 2'deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) levels in urine were analysed, and comet assay of peripheral blood lymphocytes was conducted, RESULTS: In the end of the study , compared with control group and baseline, a significant decrease of oliveive tail moment and tail/head length in comet assay in 168 g/d group was observed (P〈0.05). The 8-OH-dG level decreased significantly in 84 g/d and 168 g/d groups(P 〈0.05) . CONCLUSION: The results suggested that supplementation of almond might reduce DNA damage in smokers.
