On the Concept of "Academic Independence" of the Scholars in the Early Modern Times of China

近代学人的“学术独立”观念是中国最具争议的问题。事实上,立于近代语境中深入考察其涵义实多歧而微妙。它是近代中国民族主义思潮中的一个侧面,寻求中国学术能独立于西方;也是近代学人追求学术自由的一种反映,吁求学术能独立于政治;更是近代学人治学态度的体现,对实用价值的一种超越,即学术能独立于“致用”。

There have been serious controversies over the concept of ＂＇ academic independence＂ ot the scholars in the early modern times of China. Taking its context into consideration can reveal its subtle and complicated connotations. It reveals one part of the nationalism of China in that period. Their pursuit of academic independence from the West was a reflection of their pursuit of academic freedom; their advocacy of separating learning from politics revealed their learning attitude ; their pursuit of pure academic thinking revealed their transcendence of practicability.
