On the Development of Chinese Translation Theories

中国历史上出现过三次翻译高潮:东汉至唐宋的佛经翻译、明末清初的科技翻译和鸦片战争至“五四”的西学翻译。翻译,无论是作为文化现象、思想运动,还是作为一项职业、一种知识技能,总与所处的时代背景密不可分。翻译理论的发展,是一个不断深化的过程。

In Chinese history, three translation climaxes appeared-Sutra translation from East Hart Dynasty to Tang ＆ Song Dynasties, .science ＆ technology translation in late Ming and early Qing Dynasties and western science translation from the Opium War to the May Fourth Movement. Translation as a cultural phenomenon, or a thinking movement, or a career, or just as a kind of knowledge and skill, whatever it is, it is always closely related to its historical background, and the theory of translation develops with its practice.
