Formal Equivalence as a Standard in the Translation of Ancient Poetry

诗歌是审美化语言,它最重形式,古典诗歌则更是如此。文章通过对柳宗元《江雪》的六种英译文的比较与分析,探讨在古诗英译中的“形式对等”的可行性。文章认为“形式对等”是可以实现的,但它绝不是对原诗表层结构的亦步亦趋的机械移植。

Poetry, especially classic poetry, is an aesthetic language characteristic of its form. This thesis means to discuss the feasibility of ＂formal equivalence＂ as a standard of the translation of the ancient Chinese poetry through the comparison and analysis of six translations of Stream and Snow. It holds that the goal of ＂formal equivalence＂ can be reached, but not through mechanical word - for- word transplantation of the superficial structure of the original poem.
