《释名》是中国最早的一部理据词典,它是最早真正有意识为语词本身而编撰的一部辞书,它的辞书性质颇为明确。它又是最早有意识编撰的常用词词典,凸显词典的实用性。其释文比较全面,编排比较科学,具有独特的辞书学特色。

＂Shi Ming＂ is the first motivation dictionary in China It is the earliest dictionary which was compiled from the angle of language. It indicates definitely that it is used as a dictionary. It is also the earliest daily-word dictionary compiled consciously giving prominence to the practicability of the dictionary. Its annotations are comparatively complete, and the compilation is reasonable. It is a dictonary bearing unique characteristic.
