Study of the Legal Age of Marriage in the Tang Dynasty

唐代曾两度颁布有关婚龄的诏令，但其所规定的婚龄性质并不相同，唐太宗贞观元年（627年）所规定的“男年二十、女年十五”是劝勉结婚的年龄，而不是严格意义上的适婚年龄；唐玄宗开元二十二年（734年）所规定的“男年十五、女年十三”才是真正的适婚年龄。

In the Tang Dynasty, there were two kinds of legal age of marriage. The first one which was promulgated in the period of Tang Taizong was male age of 20 above and female age of 15 above. The second one which was promulgated in the period of Tang Xuanzong was male age of 15 above and female age of 13 above. But in reality, the first one was not the same as the second. The first one was the age when one would be adviced to get married, and the second was the age when one would be permitted to get married.
